1846: Open conflict begins over the disputed border of Texas, triggering the Mexican–American War.

1898: Spanish–American War: The United States declares state of war on Spain effective from 21st April.

1901: New York becomes 1st state requiring automobile license plates with a one-dollar fee.

1914: United States President Woodrow Wilson is persuaded by Argentina, Brazil, and Chile to accept mediation in the conflict with Mexico.

1953: Francis Crick and James Watson’s discovery of the double helix structure of DNA is published in “Nature” magazine.

1962: United States resumes above ground nuclear testing, at Christmas Island.

1971: About 200,000 anti-Vietnam War protesters march on Washington, D.C.

1980: Announcement of United States hostage rescue bungle in Iran.

1985: Roger Miller’s musical “Big River” opens at Eugene O’Neill Theater New York City for 1005 performances.

1991: Lisa Olson brings suit against NFL New England Patriots for sexual harassment.

2006: Columbia Records releases Bruce Springsteen’s 14th studio album “We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions”, a tribute to folk music pioneer Pete Seeger.

2011: At least 300 people killed in deadliest tornado outbreak in the Southern United States since the 1974 Super Outbreak.

2019: Former United States Vice President Joe Biden announces his campaign for president via video. Microsoft becomes the third United States firm to be listed with a market worth of 1 trillion, after Apple and Amazon.

93rd Academy Awards: “Nomadland” wins best film, director (Chloé Zhao), and lead actress (Frances McDormand); Anthony Hopkins best actor.
