It’s the holiday season. That, unfortunately, brings peak scamming season, too. The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a jury duty scam. Citizens have received phone calls from individuals representing themselves as employees of the Shriff Department, and telling the potential victim they missed their court date for jury duty. The scammer goes on to say the individual owes a fine, as much as $1,200 to $1,800. Public information officer David Spencer says no one from the Sheriff Department will call demanding money. If you owe money for a ticket, back taxes, or any other fee, you can pay online or in person. If you receive such a call, you’re asked to report it to the Sheriff Department. They can be reached at (985) 384- 1622.
