Joe Burrow will begin his rookie season as a team captain.
The former LSU record-setting quarterback has been named one of seven team captains for the Cincinnati Bengals. The Heisman Trophy winner, who was selected by Cincinnati with the No. 1 overall pick in April, will be the only rookie quarterback starting this weekend in the NFL.
“It was one of my goals coming in,” Burrow told members of the media on Wednesday. “I really didn’t expect to be a captain, but I couldn’t be happier to represent our team and our offense. We have a lot of guys that could have been up there but I’m really happy my team decided I should be the one to get that honor.”
The Bengal players held a team-wide vote earlier this week in which offensive players voted for two offensive players and one special teams player, and defensive players voted for two defensive players and a special teams player.
Joining Burrow as captains are running back Giovani Bernard, wide receiver A.J. Green, linebacker Josh Bynes, safety and former New Orleans Saint Vonn Bell, safety Shawn Williams and punter Kevin Huber.
Burrow and the Bengals open up the season on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers. Kickoff is set for 3:05 p.m. The game can be heard live on News Talk 98.5 is Acadiana’s home for the Cincinnati Bengals.
