Traditional Valentines Day Goodies may be charming for human sweethearts, but pose potential risks for pets. Most pet owners know chocolate is dangerous to both dogs and cats. There are othr “goodies” that also pose risks. Floral arrangements that include lilies contain a toxin that can cause kidney failure in cats. The American Animal Hospital Asscoiation warns that Stargazer lily, Tiger lily, other Asiatic lilies, and some daylilies are the most dangerous. Essential oils, massage oils and scented candles pose multiple risks for dogs. Garlic and onion in human food can destroy red blood cells in both cats and dogs, causing anemia. The AAHA says Valentines Day is one of the busiest times of the year for poison hotlines.
