These historical events took place on today, March 21st.

1925: Tennessee governor Austin Peay passes the “Butler Act” making Tennessee the first state to outlaw teaching the theory of evolution. It would be repealed in 1967.

1947: United States President Harry Truman signs Executive Order 9835 which requires “complete and unswerving loyalty to the United States” of all federal government employees.

1952: More than 25,000 people attend the first rock & roll concert ever when Alan Freed presents Moondog Coronation Ball at old Cleveland Arena.

1962: Yogi the Bear becomes the first creature to be ejected at supersonic speeds by the United States military testing ejection seats.

1963: After 29 years of operation, one of the most famed prisons, “The Rock” USP Alcatraz located in the San Francisco Bay is closed.

1965: Martin Luther King Jr. leads more than 3,200 civil rights demonstrators during a historic march from Selma to Montgomery, the state’s capital.

1980: The season finale of the hit television show “Dallas” shatters ratings record as villain J.R. Ewing is shot by unknown assailant.

1984: A portion of Central Park in New York City is renamed Strawberry Fields honoring legendary Beatles member and slained singer John Lennon.

1989: The first sea test of the Trident 2 missile self-destructs off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida.

2006: The first ever tweet is sent out. Twitter founder and CEO Jack Dorsey writes “just setting up my twttr.”

2018: Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg admits they “made mistakes” after data on 50 million users is harvested by Cambridge Analytica.
