The Coal Miner’s Daughter, Loretta Lynn, Has Died

Legendary Country Musician Loretta Lynn has passed away at the age of 90. This is according to a statement from the Associated Press. The original “Coal Miner’s Daughter” of Butcher Holler, Kentucky passed at home in Hurricane Mills, TN.

Loretta Lynn grew up in the coal mines of Kentucky. Like her most famous song suggests, her father was a coal miner. She married Doo Little Lynn at a young age and became a mother to six children. Reportedly, Doo Little Lynn recognized early on that Loretta was a talented singer and encouraged Loretta to pursue music. He bought her a guitar as gift and lined up gigs in the local honky-tonks.

Loretta Lynn was a distinguished song writer focusing on women’s issues. She sang songs about birth control, the Vietnam war and cheating husbands. Due to the controversial content, some radio stations refused to play her music, banning 9 of her songs.

Even with all the challenges that she faced, Loretta Lynn still became a Legendary singer celebrated by many. During her career, she landed sixteen Number 1 hit songs and became the first female CMA Entertainer of the Year in 1972. In 2021, Lynn produced her 46th album calling it, Still Woman Enough.

Loretta Lynn’s life story was detailed in the 1976 autobiography, Coal Miner’s Daughter and later brought to the big screen starring Sissy Spacek.
