These historical events took place on March 30th:

1867: United States buys Alaska from Russia for $7,200,000, $109 million in 2018, roughly 2 cents an acre.

1870: The 15th Amendment to the United States constitution was adopted, guaranteeing the right to vote regardless of race.

1910: The Mississippi Legislature founded The University of Southern Mississippi.

1945: A defecting German pilot delivers a Messerschmitt Me 262A-1 to Americans in World War II.

1946: Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer’s musical “St Louis Woman”, starring Pearl Bailey and featuring the Nicholas Brothers, opens at Martin Beck Theater, NYC; runs for 113 performances.

1950: Bell Telephone Laboratories announced the invention of the phototransistor in Murray Hill, New Jersey.

1961: The Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs is signed in New York.

1964: Astronaut John Glenn withdraws from the race in Ohio for Senate.

1965: A car bomb explodes in front of the United States Embassy in Saigon, killing 22 and wounding 183 others in Vietnam War.

1981: United States President Ronald Reagan is shot and wounded in an assassination attempt by John Hinckley, three others are also wounded.

1984: New York police detective Robert Cunningham offers waitress Phyllis Penzo half of a $1 lottery ticket, the next day they win $6 million.
